We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Grand Chief Samuel Gargan, a founding voice of Keepers of the Water.

Sam dedicated his life to protecting the land and waters of Treaty 11 Territory. From his leadership in creating the Edéhzhíe Protected Area to his strong voice against fracking in the Northwest Territories, he carried the wisdom of generations and reminded us to always think far into the future.

“When we think of conserving, as Dene, we think 10,000 years from now, for those generations, from then to now.” – Sam Gargan

We honor his vision, his leadership, and his unwavering devotion to the people, land, and water. His spirit will continue to guide Keepers of the Water for generations to come.
